You can listen to writing advice until you are old and gray, but the truth is, writing is an act of pure will.
Writing for an hour or two each day (if you have nothing to write, write about that) and reading a lot, along with the common advice to edit, edit, edit are essential. Too many people think writing is an act of inspiration. May I recommend one site to read, a quite new literary journal a friend started.
It may be worth noting that same poet friend of mine has been blogging about writing. Notes from a Brooding Poet: An experiment. A memoir. A guide to poetic craft. A paean to tiny dogs and poetry.
I'm glad this article could be useful for you guys. One of the hardest things to do is just sit and write. Sometimes you have to endure the drudgery of discipline in order to perfect your craft.
The work is the inspiration
I agree wholeheartedly...
Oh, I liked this. I added the site to my feed.
Discipline is difficult, but I would be lost without the written word.
Dear Kymlee,
Thanks for adding my story, that interview was one of the best writing chat's I've ever had with a writer. It was really cool to see everybody discussing it.
Dear Yasmin, Ardith, Ignoblus, and Noah,
Thanks for reading. If there's a writer you would enjoy learning more about (or somebody I should be reading) please drop me a line over at The Publishing Spot!
Your friend,
Jason Boog
I am both blessed and cursed by having a day-job that requires a good deal of creative writing. It keeps me in the routine of writing, but it also means that sometimes I'm just too frazzled to keep up with my personal writing goals.
Division--I do a lot of writing at work myself. It makes it so hard to sit in front of my own pages at night! I see your problem, and I'd love to know what you do to cope...
